every detail counts...

The Spring 2014 RTW shows this season were far from forgettable. Sporty seems to be the big trend that just won't quit and is continuing  into next season. So much so that Vera Wang's evening gowns were made with power meshes and laces invoking a sporty girl on the go vibe. Everyone seems to be catching on, from Dries Van Noten, to Phillip Lim, to Christopher Kane, sporty silhouettes with activewear inspired fabrics are everywhere.

With this in mind, I started work on my next designer assignment, a bustier. Possibly part of a 3-4 piece "Lifestyle Collection" as part of the final project.

I was (and still am) inspired by Vera Wang's 2014 RTW collection, especially this gown on the left (photocred: Style.com). The organic lines mixed with the functional fabric and beautifully detailed lace is on trend and completely covetable this season.

With this picture glued to my brain, I ran all around the garment district (as per usual) in search of beautiful laces and power meshes......maybe even a bit of leather for sex appeal.

With my fabrics eagerly awaiting their shining moment, I started where a designer always starts, square one: the mannequin. Better known as a blank sheet of paper. With some style tape, I mapped out exactly where I wanted the seamlines to go (keeping in mind the sinuous lines of Vera's collection) Then I draped muslin over top of these lines to create the pattern pieces for the body fabric and the boned lining.

Drape. Cut. Sew. Hem........ Get graded.
